Dear Parents,

I thoroughly enjoyed attending the swimming sports on Friday and today. There were two significant
factors which impressed me the most; firstly the high standard of the swimming, indicating that many
boys had been working hard to develop their swimming ability, and secondly, the looks on the boys’
faces when they touched the end to find they had been placed. All the hard work Mr Taylor had done
in previously timing the boys so they swam against boys of equal ability, ensured a large number were
able to gain a place in their events.

At the conclusion of this week your son will bring home an envelope containing an assessment form
entitled, ‘Student Achievement in Relation to National Norms and Expectations.’ This will also be
emailed home as an attachment.

The document provides accurate data of where your son’s achievement lies compared to the national
average. It includes your son’s Reading and Spelling age and also his level of performance in a wide
array of national standardised tests. His scores are measured in stanines, which compares a test
performance using nine equal units. Scores of 1 – 3 are considered below average, 4 – 6 are
considered average and 7 – 9 are above average. A diagram showing a normal distribution curve is
included with the document.

The target levels in writing and in basic facts follow the same direction as that of the National
Standards, where the student should be achieving at that level by the end of the academic year.
Therefore if your son is slightly below at this stage then he is right ‘on target’ at a national level.
It is ultimately your decision as a parent whether you share this information with your son. The
simple rationale would be to share it if you feel it would benefit his academic progress and
application. As a school we are more concerned with the progress he makes as the year unfolds and
ensuring that we have programmes in place to maximise his true potential.

In Week Seven you will be able to attend a Parent and Teacher Conference when you may wish to
discuss further the information you have received.

Congratulations to the four Medbury cricket teams who defeated St Andrew’s last week, and to the
tennis team who put up a strong fight. It is great to have such a positive first inter-school fixture.

Yours sincerely,
Peter Kay
Headmaster.
