Christchurch Symphony Orchestra Brass or Woodwind Scholarship
Medbury School, in partnership with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO), is proud to offer a Brass or Woodwind Scholarship as part of our Centre of Excellence in Music.
This scholarship is designed to support talented and dedicated young musicians.
What the successful applicant will receive:
- Up to 40% tuition fees covered for up to three years.
- Full coverage of music tuition fees for up to three years, including instrument tuition and group ensemble fees.
- Three one-on-one mentoring sessions with a member of the CSO.
- Exclusive musical opportunities through Medbury’s collaboration with the CSO and the Centre of Excellence in Music.
We are looking for a boy who:
- Plays a brass or woodwind instrument and has developed a solid foundation of skills on his instrument.
- Practises regularly and is keen to take on new challenges through the Centre of Excellence in Music.
- Is willing to participate in school music groups and contribute positively to Medbury’s available ensembles.
- Demonstrates strong musical potential, with developing technical skills and musicianship.
- Is eager to represent the school in musical settings and is keen to perform at both school events and external opportunities.
Audition Format
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, and will last approximately 15 minutes, consisting of:
Performance – Two contrasting pieces on a chosen instrument(s). If playing two instruments, one piece per instrument is required.
Aural Testing – Basic ear training tests (intervals, rhythm, triads, pitch).
Sight Reading – A short extract to assess musical fluency.
Musical Interest Interview – Discussion on musical background, practice habits, and aspirations.
A warm-up room will be available 15 minutes before the audition.
Backing tracks and accompanists are encouraged. If using a backing track, please send it to April Holland in advance.
